A branch of the Humane Society animal shelter was looking to onboard new volunteer dog walkers. One issue that had come up repeatedly with volunteers is the need to reinforce good behavior for the dogs each walk to better prepare them for adoption.

I developed an e-Learning training activity to be included in a dog behaviour facilitator as new volunteers begin. The dog walkers learn to reinforce good behavior when approaching a kennel for a walk and how to approach and handle the dogs while doing so.

There was also a need for a portable informational page with graphics for the dog walkers to carry and refer to if needed. I created an engaging infographic using Canva Pro to design and information provided by the SME’s and their training manual.

Process: I consulted facility SME’s to establish the learning objective for this project. We decided to measure learner progress, and whether the learning objective has been met, by using a learner satisfaction survey that measures their confidence in their ability to handle the dogs appropriately.

The e-learning course is best paired with the portable infographic to reinforce the strategies, commands, and procedures for removing a dog from the kennel, walking, and returning to the kennel. It allows the volunteer to have a hands on material to refer to while applying them with the dogs.
